Binary neutron star mergers: highlights and perspectives from modeling
Giovedì 1 febbraio alle ore 15:00, il Prof. Albino Perego dell’ Università degli Studi di Trento, terrà il seminario dal titolo “Binary neutron star mergers: highlights and perspectives from modeling“.
Abstract
Mergers of neutron stars are primary players of cosmic evolution. These extreme events are indeed loud sources of gravitational waves, central engine of short GRBs and one of the production sites of heavy elements through the so-called r-process nucleosynthesis. This rich phenomenology was confirmed by the first multimessenger detection of GW170817, the first binary neutron star (BNS) merger observed as a source of gravitational waves and photons, for which a kilonova detection confirmed the synthesis of elements heavier than iron. Theoretical models are essential to provide robust interpretations and extract the most available information from observations. In this talk, I will first review the status of BNS merger modeling. After that,I will show a few practical examples, including the interpretation of the BNS mergers we have observed so far, i.e. GW170817 and GW190425. Finally, I will discuss the interesting hypothesis that a BNS merger has occurred within 100pc around 3Myr ago, in the solar neighbourhood, as potential interpretation of the abundances of radioactive isotopes observed in oceanic sediments.
