An introduction to dwarf galaxy science: an observer’s perspective

Giovedì 12 settembre alle ore 15:00, la Dr. Rebecca Habas dell’INAF-OA Abruzzo terrà il seminario dal titolo “An introduction to dwarf galaxy science (and me): an observer’s perspective”.

Abstract
Dwarf galaxies — the smallest, least massive, and least luminous galaxies — are a fundamental component of the Universe. They dominate the galaxy budget by number and are believed to be the first galaxies to form, later becoming the building blocks that created galaxies like our own Milky Way through a series of subsequent mergers. Despite the success of the hierarchical formation scenario to describe the Universe we see today, dwarf galaxies present several challenges to the ΛCDM model, such as the dark matter content of dwarfs and the planes-of-satellites problem. Recent deep imaging surveys have unveiled large populations of faint dwarf galaxies that can be used to address these challenges, and to study galaxy evolution more generally. In the last several years, I have worked with the MATLAS collaborations and within the Euclid consortium to help identify and characterize > 3000 dwarf galaxies, across various environments. In this talk, I will present highlights of these works, and what we have learned about galaxy evolution and ΛCDM cosmology. I intend to present the material at an introductory level that is accessible for those who do not work in extragalactic astronomy. I would also like to take this opportunity to introduce myself and my background to everyone at the observatory.
